What Are Quilters Blogging About Today?

I don’t see a great number of medallion quilts anywhere, but they are a great way to make a square quilt for double and king size beds. I have to admit the I don’t design a lot either, and this is the last two designs in my one and only current project file which feature medallion quilt designs.

My favourite of these two designs is the second one.

I love it!

Love the way the stars near the corners are framed … a nice contrast to the other blocks.

Christmas is approaching … a group of quilters yesterday spent more time discussing Christmas shopping than fabric shopping!

Some times less is more.

Make that OFTEN less is more … especially when it comes to allowing space for quilting to shine.

Love the quilting space again, but also love the centre panel.

I like the first design above …

… but the second design is my favourite.

I love the tangled corners of the borders!

The idea behind medallion quilts is to start with a block, then add borders.

The borders can be simple pieced blocks or applique, but work best with a mixture of simple pieces and more decorative applique blocks. The applique can be done on blocks, or long strips of solid fabric.

Very interesting.

This project file was started simply to see how the edges of a mixed bag of Log Cabin blocks could be bordered. Curved bits, pointy bits can be mixed with straight lines of zigzags! One day I should add designs to the centre areas of all these designs.

The extra curves in the second design is telling me that a large area of applique could work well in the centre as well.

I guess any pieced blocks could be used to fill the blank space to. or perhaps a mixture of pieced and applique blocks.

Of course, just ...

Interesting.

Start with a square block, add triangles to each side, then add triangles to each side again, add a border. A simple concept which can lead to some rather complex designs.

I like the second one.

Love it!

I particularly love using borders as a big part of the overall design, rather then just a frame to hold a design together.

Love the second one too, even though the outer borders are not identical!

Interesting and different but with a touch of the traditional, the sort of quilt designs I like.

Hmmm … the colouring in the second design is sort of Christmassy … anyone would think that I have let some of my Christmas decorations out of storage.

Colours a it dull, but I love the overall design.

Second not as interesting as the first design.

Very simple borders with rather complicated corners makes a very interesting frame .

Pointy pieced blocks are not my favourite design feature, but add a few curves, and some applique inspired quilting motifs, and an applique border and I love it!

I like the second design, including the pieced borders. I guess the quilting motifs help!

Not my favourite colour scheme, but the contrast is spot on.

Once upon a time, before I started going to quilt shows, I would have ignored any art work which had blue anywhere but in the sky, but now I often ignore colour in a design if the design appeals to me.

An experiment with a weird colour combination … I like the design, but not the colouring!

Same collection of blocks as yesterday, but on point. I like the first one.

Bright … and very pointy. I love it!

The blocks are all variations of one block, which is a 12P block … drafted on a 12 x 12 grid.

The second design is more subdued though the colours are the same … just less of them.

Looks like an antique! I love it, but the border is a bit too dark for the centre.

Now the border is too wide … far too wide!

I think I might just have a play with the designs in this project … the weather is promising to be wet and cold, so need something to do inside!

I love the star blocks around the outside of the first design today.

I love the center block in the second when compared to the other very similar blocks … the only difference is the more open appearance due to a different fabric, the background fabric, used for eight very skinny triangles.

I like interesting borders, and in the design above there are 4 of them!

Another four interesting borders, plus a very simple atrip border which is very effective in this design.
